Teacher Tips and FYI's
The purpose of this Web site is to inform, remind, and/or advise teachers-to-be concerning situations that they will likely be faced with one day in their classroom.

Topic 1 YOUR STUDENT HAS HIV/AIDS--but you don't know it.
Aids awareness has brought to all of our attention the importance of using greater safety measures when dealing with sick and/or hurt students. More specifically, it is vital to use rubber gloves when dealing with a bleeding child. BUT, did you know...as a teacher, you do NOT have to be made aware that one of your students has HIV/AIDS? By law, these students have the right to confidentiality. Disclosure is decided by the parents and the student. They are not required to tell the school principal, nurse, or you. They are advised to tell the school nurse, who will administer any medications, but are otherwise cautioned on disclosing this information to anyone else. It is important to follow safety rules because of what you know AND because of what you might not know.
